Dr. William "Bill" Lapenta

September 21, 1961 - September 30, 2019

While his time with the WPO Team was brief, he left an indelible legacy not only at NOAA, but throughout the atmospheric science community.

NOAA Research "OAR" Weather Program Office celebrated the life of Dr. William (Bill) Lapenta during the weekend of October 4, 2019 with a Memorial Service in Virginia held by Dr. Lapenta's family. 

In memory of Bill’s outstanding contributions to the atmospheric sciences and his passion for supporting the next generation of leaders in the field, the American Meteorological Society (AMS) has established a fund in his name.

NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and NOAA Research (OAR) are organizing a NOAA event to remember the legacy of William "Bill" Lapenta. It will be held at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction at 5830 University Research Ct, College Park, MD 20740 on Friday, December 6, 2019.

A tree has been planted in front of NCWCP in memory of Dr. William "Bill" Lapenta and was donated by the building management firm.

A plaque will accompany the tree.




William “Bill” Lapenta, Ph.D., was recently the Acting Director of NOAA’s Weather Program Office (WPO), a dynamic program within NOAA’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research that supports NOAA’s world-class weather and air quality research, accelerating its transition to NOAA’s National Weather Service to benefit the American public. 

Bill came to NOAA Research from the National Weather Service (NWS), where he was the Director of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) delivering national and global weather, water, climate and space weather guidance, forecasts, warnings and analyses to help save lives and protect property. As Director, Dr. Lapenta oversaw the planning, science and technology, and operational responsibilities of NCEP’s nine national centers, which include the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK., Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, CO., and the Weather Prediction Center in College Park, MD. 

Lapenta received his Ph.D. in meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University (1990) and Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology with a minor in mathematics from the State University of New York at Oneonta (1983). A native of Nyack, N.Y., Lapenta was residing Northern Virginia. He and his wife, Cathy (also a meteorologist), have two adult children.
