The Weather Program Office Social Science Program (WPO SSP) is pleased to announce the release of a new StoryMap, highlighting the March 14-16, 2025, severe weather outbreak which produced more than 115 tornadoes, numerous wildfires, dust storms, damaging winds, and large hail across the Central and Southern United States. Titled “Strengthening America’s Resilience to Extreme Weather,” this StoryMap was developed in close collaboration with colleagues across the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), particularly the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) and the Global Systems Laboratory (GSL). We extend our gratitude to our partners for their valuable contributions.
The StoryMap shares a “behind the scenes” view, illustrating how NOAA OAR-supported research on public perception, response, and community impact enhances critical risk communication during an extreme weather event. Forecasters and first responders can use these research results to increase the usability of weather data and technologies, empowering the American public to better prepare and respond – ultimately protecting lives and reinforcing national resilience.
