Lenore K. Pedicord

Lenore K Pedicord is a contractor supporting the Weather Program Office (WPO) as a Science Communicator. In this role, she writes and edits both internal and external materials to support WPO and highlight WPO’s research and impacts.

Previously, Lenore was part of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Directorate for STEM Education’s communications team, where she wrote stories that covered the impact of their research funding. Her favorite NSF story that she wrote covered the age at which children begin developing their own STEM identities, which tied into her graduate research into how media portrayals affect public perceptions of STEM careers. Previously, she was a college professor and taught biology and environmental science students critical thinking skills using real-world examples.

Lenore has an M.A. in Communication, with a focus on Science Communication, and a B.S. in Environmental Science and Policy, with a minor in Applied Conservation, both from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. She studied how to communicate risk and the relationship between the scientific community and the public. She completed the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation and a wildlife and conservation-focused study abroad in Kenya.

When not working, Lenore enjoys creative pursuits, including sketching and embroidery, reading, swimming, gardening, playing with her cats, and traveling with her husband to find the perfect mountain range to retire near.
