The Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC), alongside NOAA National Weather Service’s Office of Model Development (OMD) and the broader Unified Forecast System (UFS) community, has achieved a major milestone: the official public release of the Community Global Workflow (GW) v1.0.0.
This release marks a critical milestone as NOAA’s fulfillment of the Congressional mandate to EPIC to “create a community global weather research modeling system that is accessible by the public…for running on public computers and networks located outside of NOAA IT systems utilizing innovative strategies including cloud-based computing capabilities”” (P.L. 115-423, Sec.4) and the mandate to NOAA to “to prioritize the open access of its numerical models to promote innovation and improve the accuracy and timeliness of forecasts” (15 U.S. Code § 8512(a)).
Why This Matters
The Community Global Workflow v1.0.0 provides researchers, developers, and operational partners with a community-accessible, end-to-end framework for running and testing global UFS model configurations. By integrating all components required for a complete forecast cycle into a unified workflow, this release:
- Simplifies experimentation for scientists worldwide,
- Improves reproducibility of complex weather models, and
- Strengthens collaboration across the entire Earth System Modeling community.
Did you know? This public community release is the exact same superstructure used to run the NWS’s operational GFS, GEFS, and the upcoming GCAFS and SFS.
