Extreme precipitation is among the most damaging and deadly weather hazards worldwide yet forecast skill has improved only marginally over the past two decades. At the same time, user and partner needs for accuracy, specificity, and lead time continue to grow. To address this gap, NOAA has developed the Precipitation Prediction Grand Challenge, a coordinated research-to-operations effort to address this challenge.
In this webinar, Dr. Novak will present the structure and early successes of this major initiative, spanning advances in process understanding, observations, data assimilation, modelling, post-processing, and operational services.
