Research Funding

WPO posts a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) annually. Learn more about the funding process here.

Open Science

WPO’s Portfolio Analysis and Research Transitions (PART) team manages the REACH and SPARK tools, which utilize robust dashboards to increase access to research findings and outputs of WPO-supported research.

REACH connects practitioners, scientists, policymakers, and the public to more than 700 research outputs, including journal articles, code, data, and tools. SPARK allows users to filter more than 300 ST&S division-funded projects by hazard or topic area and find publications pertaining to each active or completed project. WPO intends to expand this research portal to encompass its entire portfolio.

Student Opportunities

WPO has hosted students through various internships and fellowships since 2019.

WINGS Dissertation Fellowship

WPO, along with UCAR’s Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS), established the WINGS Dissertation Fellowship for PhD candidates to focus their dissertation research on an area of scientific importance for the broader Weather Enterprise. We will not be taking applications for 2026.
