The NOAA Weather Program Office (WPO) Social Science Program (SSP) is excited to announce the SSP Data Forums, a two-part virtual forum series as part of its sustained efforts to support and expand data capabilities and collaboration across the social, behavioral, and economic sciences (SBES) extreme weather community.
The series is meant to provide a practical and approachable entry point into understanding and integrating social science data for hazards research. It is not a technical course or data science bootcamp; rather, these sessions will focus on increasing knowledge and readiness for extending the utility of social science data beyond individual research projects as a crucial component for advancing the broader weather and hazard research ecosystem (Forum 1) and introducing practical tools, such as Jupyter notebooks and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) principles, that facilitate the integration of social science data with physical science data for enhanced interdisciplinary insights and collaboration (Forum 2).
Whether you’re just getting started or thinking about the next level of interdisciplinary collaboration, these forums will offer a supportive, hands-on environment to explore data awareness and integration. No technical background is needed, but those connecting social science with forecasting, emergency management, and other hazards research or those who attended the 2025 Extreme Weather SBES Summit may find it especially relevant.
This two-part series will be held virtually on September 24 and 25, 2025, from 1-3pm Eastern.
Register for Forum 1 (September 24, 2025, 1-3pm ET) here.
Register for Forum 2 (September 25, 2025, 1-3pm ET) here.
Please note that you will need to register for both sessions separately; you are not required to attend both Forums, but it is strongly encouraged if your schedule allows. For any questions, please email socialscience.wpo@noaa.gov.
